Community FEWD launches urgent fundraising campaign

The chef-led food program that prevents food waste in º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½has diverted 50,000 pounds of food from landfills since 2022. They serve food right back to the community and also cater events.

The º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½Neighbourhood Support Coalition program started by Chef Yasi Zorlutuna in 2022 is facing a $60,000 shortfall. The good news is it reached its original goal of $10,000 to stay in business until May, but it is now faced with trying to find funding to run the program for the rest of the year and beyond.
The group prioritizes food equity with dignity (FEWD) and prevents food waste in our community. A press release said that since its inception, Community FEWD has served more than 44,000 meals and diverted 50,000 pounds of food from the landfill.

Volunteers process large quantities and diverse varieties of food collected from emergency food access groups and other partners that would otherwise go to waste and cook and serve delicious meals to the community to address local food access needs. They also offer catering services to help maintain the program.

Here are six examples of how far money goes to immediately impact vulnerable populations.

1. $750 supports soup for and the Mobile Community Health Van for a full month or covers one month’s rent of the kitchen.

2. $1,000 covers one take-home dinner service for the community. These meals are offered free or by donation and include vegan and gluten-free options. Folks can bring their own container and come grab a hot meal.
3. $2,000 covers one location’s take-home dinners for a month. FEWD currently prepares dinners for distribution in the Ward, at the West-End Recreation Centre and for F.U.N. Fridays at Shelldale Family Gateway.
4. $3,000 pays for one month of weekly meals for , who serve the community on Sundays.
5. $6,000 pays for all take-home dinner services it is serving for a month.
6. $12,000 covers all operational and program costs for a month.
