Meta is now joining a growing list of tech powerhouses going passwordless.
In an shared on Wednesday, the multinational tech giant that owns popular social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, said it is rolling out passkeys for Facebook with availability on Messenger in the coming months.
This, according to the announcement, will make it simpler and safer to sign in to Facebook with the same fingerprint, face ID or PIN account holders already use on their mobile device to verify their identity.

“We’re introducing passkeys on Facebook for mobile devices, offering another tool to safeguard your privacy and security,” Meta said, adding that the new identification verification technology is more secure than traditional passwords since they cannot be guessed or easily stolen.
“The same passkey you set up for Facebook will also work on Messenger once this capability launches,” the tech giant confirmed in the announcement.

In a previous with Metroland Media, Dave Lewis, Global Advisory Chief Information Security Officer for Ontario-based 1Password, said a pass-key is like a magic key that lives on a user’s phone or computer.
It uses a public and private key technology that eliminates shared secrets, he said.
can easily be intercepted or stolen often through phishing scams and data breaches. Passkeys eliminate that risk by using a public key cryptography.
“You can think of it like a secret handshake between your device and the website, where only your device knows the secret moves,” he said.
When users sign-up on a platform, a public key gets saved on the platform’s server, while the other private key stays tucked away safely on the phone or computer. When the user logs on, the platform basically asks the user to prove their identity. The device then uses the private key to answer the website without ever showing it.
“No typing, no guessing, no sticky notes on your monitor. Just a secure password-free login that hackers can’t phish, guess or steal.”

For now, passkey is only supported on mobile devices, Meta said. This means that users will still need to use their username and password to access Facebook on a computer.
But with passkeys becoming more widely adopted, and with the big push by FIDO Alliance companies like Amazon, , Apple and Microsoft to go passwordless as a means to protect the security of online authentication, expect more passwordless features for other platforms to come.
