The final episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale” airs Tuesday, May 27, at 9 p.m. on . Fans in Canada can also watch it on Amazon Prime Video.
“I don’t need to wrap things up in a nice bow. The book doesn’t end neatly,” the show’s executive producer Warren Littlefield said in a news release. “I don’t want our ending to not feel like the book.”

Next week’s episode will conclude the series that first aired in 2017. It will wrap up June Osborne’s story and lead fans to a spinoff that has reportedly also been filmed in Ontario.
What is ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ spinoff?

Hulu’s followup to the Gilead story officially started filming April 7 in Ontario. Based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel “The Testaments,” it is a sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Many of the show’s scenes were reportedly shot in Toronto but cast and crew were also spotted filming an unsettling scene in downtown Oshawa.

In an Instagram post, Hulu shared a snap of the cast and crew including some main characters from “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Ann Dowd will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia and Elisabeth Moss will be back, but this time behind the camera as the show’s executive producer.

“The Testaments” is set in Gilead a few years after the end of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Aside from Aunt Lydia, the show will also feature a grown-up Hannah Osborne played by actress Chase Infiniti.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ season 6
The hit Hulu drama, based on Margaret Atwood’s best selling dystopian novel, aired its season 6 premiere April 8.
The sixth and final season of The Handmaid's Tale premieres April 8 on Hulu.

According to the official Season 6 synopsis, in the final instalment of the hit show, June’s “unyielding spirit and determination” will bring her back into the fight to take down Gilead.
“This is the season that reveals everybody’s true character. Are they courageous or selfish? What have they learned from their experiences?” writer Eric Tuchman said in a news release.
“We’ve highlighted the bravery and courage, hope and determination that it takes to go up against Gilead,” he added.
The show follows the story of June, played by Elisabeth Moss, who was forced into sexual servitude in Gilead, a theocratic patriarchal regime that supposedly replaced the United States. June, who became a handmaid, was brought to serve a family in what used to be the city of Boston.
The fictional Gilead, however, wasn’t shot in the U.S., but mainly in various locations in Ontario.

The show’s cast and crew were spotted filming the final season in Toronto, Cambridge, Hamilton and Pickering, among other areas.
Filming began in September 2024 in Toronto and the GTA. In late 2024, some cast and crew were spotted in key areas in downtown Toronto shooting some scenes.
That same month, filming of some scenes for the final season closed off 8th Concession Road between Sideline 6 and . Crews were spotted shooting on the road and some interior shots inside a private property in the area.
In , the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Scottish Rite served as backdrop for some scenes in the show’s last season. Military equipment was also seen dotting the parking lot of the , where the crews filmed in January. The building appeared to serve as the stand-in for the abandoned Boston Globe on the show.
Scenes were also reportedly filmed outside a majestic old home on Aberdeen Avenue and Bay Street South and inside
In early this year, a large wooden gallows was also seen being set up in Queen’s Square for filming of some season 6 scenes. The cast and crew were reportedly seen roaming around the area in Galt.

Other filming locations
Hamilton and Cambridge were favourite filming locations for the cast and crew of the show. Many scenes for the previous seasons were shot in both cities.
The dreaded wall in Gilead, for instance, was actually a concrete wall in . The site has served as backdrop for some of the show’s most unsettling scenes.
Cast in their signature red coats were also often spotted walking along Cambridge’s Main Street bridge in . Some roads in Cambridge were closed off to traffic to accommodate the show’s filming and some shops in Galt were closed and transformed to mimic a war zone.

The cast and crew have been to Cambridge so many times to film that the city now has a . The tour takes fans to all spots that served as stand-ins for Gilead.
Hamilton also served as home for “The Handmaid’s Tale” characters. The famous Waterford’s House, where some disturbing scenes were filmed, is actually a Victorian-era home in Hamilton. Scenes of the handmaids walking outside were filmed in the neighbourhood. The team reportedly spent three years filming in the home.

The Gilead Chamber Council in the show, where a female character famously stood trial, is actually the 19th-century Scottish Rite in Hamilton.

In Toronto, cast and crew were spotted filming in the famous Yonge-Dundas Square, University of Toronto, Toronto City Hall and St. Lawrence Market, among other areas.
St. Aidan’s in Toronto served as a stand in for the Red Centre, where young handmaids were trained.
Other spots that served as backdrop for the show include in southern Simcoe County, , the Hidden Valley Tunnel in Burlington, King Street in , the and Coronation Park in Oakville.
